My studio practice concerns making art which challenges the boundaries of photography and painting by interfering with the segregation of the mediums. Rather than a device for reportage, I use the camera as a means to gather information. Typically I archive photographs of assemblages or collages and in this instance - paintings on glass with the intent for these images to be digitally merged in post creating a complex aesthetic.
Something magical occurs through control and the manipulation of composition, color balance, exposure, multiple exposures, staging and editing. I am seeking an element of mystery or “magic” – a conundrum. In this black and white body of work of imaginary, enigmatic abstract landscapes, I have made and photographed paintings which are discarded afterwards thus further removing the relationship between what is left in print form and the original material that I investigate.
This “Glass-Metal-Ink” series in which I merge painting with photography represents a natural evolution from the staging of assemblage and collage which has defined my practice for the past five years. |
